Milco Mancevski receives title "National Artist"

Renowned Macedonian film director Milco Mancevski received Tuesday title National Artist 2012.

As of this year, Mancevski will get Denar 60,000 (EUR 1,000) monthly fee for the rest of his life.

"Upon reviewing the nomination from the Macedonian Cinematheque, the Commission decided that Mancevski meets criteria from the Law on National Artist. The title will be presented by President Gjorge Ivanov on September 8", said Culture Minister Elizabeta Kanceska-Milevska at a press conference.

According to her, Mancevski's comprehensive work focuses on promotion of Macedonia's film not only in the country, but in global terms.

"All criteria stipulated in the law are not unfeasible. I am truly glad that Mancevski is this year's laureate", added Kanceska-Milevska

Babunski brothers play for heated rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid

Spanish newspaper Marca published an article describing the friendly rivalry of the Babunski brothers who play for the youth teams of Spanish rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Macedonian international Boban Babunski spent several years during his playing career in Spain. After he retired, he decided to make Spain his permanent home. His two sons, David and Dorian, showed interest in football at a young age and drew interest from various Spanish clubs. David is considered the more talented player and has spent the past couple of years playing for the Barcelona youth system. Meanwhile, Dorian, just last year, left Cornellá to join the youth system of Real Madrid. The newspaper mentioned that this is the first time brothers have played for the heated rivals, whose games are referred to as the El Clásico.

Speaking to Marca, their agent, Esteve Calzada, stated the following, "They are two good players. David associates well with his teammates, has good technique, vision, and a great final ball. Dorian, on the other hand, has different characteristics. He is a centre forward, stronger, with a good shot."

Meanwhile, Boban Babunski said the following about his sons and their teams, "They are at two of the best clubs in the world in terms of developing talent. However, the two teams have different philosophies. Barcelona teaches kids to keep hold of possession and play within the rules while at Real Madrid, they give more freedom to the player and they are allowed to improvise more."

Boban Babunski further added, "The rivalry has become an enormous affection. David and Dorian always talk to each other, discuss games, and wish one another luck. I miss that. Dorian has always said that his best coach is his brother."

Boban Babunski is currently the manager of the Macedonian U21 national team and is also the top assistant to John Toshack on the senior national team. Toshack also lives in Spain so Babunski and him regularly communicate in both Spanish and English during training.

Both David and Dorian Babunski have recently played for the Macedonian U17 national team but both players have dual nationalities so they are also eligible to represent Spain. Therefore, the Football Federation of Macedonia (FFM) must remain persistent and convince the Babunski brothers to represent Macedonia internationally. Boban Babunski is currently employed by FFM so that should help in convincing his two sons to play for Macedonia moving forward.

Who knows, maybe one day in the future, we will see David Babunski and Barcelona face Dorian Babunski and Real Madrid during the El Clásico, the biggest rivalry in club football.

Macedonian Artists Have Special Effect on Hollywood

Visual effects wizards from Macedonia are playing a key role in the production of a growing number of blockbusters - of which the new ‘Transformers’ is only the latest.

Cinemagoers know about the success of Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon, the summer blockbuster that has grossed nearly $800 million at box offices worldwide.

But few people know that 30 artists from Macedonia were part of the movie’s special effects team.

They work at fx3x, a CGI studio in Skopje founded in 1997 by Kristijan Danilovski and Milivoje Gorgevic. And they are not the only Macedonians working on Hollywood productions.

Animator and technical director Orde Stevanoski works at Sony Pictures Imageworks in Los Angeles. He is probably best- known to Macedonian audiences as the creator of the first Macedonian 3D animated film, Levi in Love.

“While making my own films is the passion that started it all, being a full-time employee of a major effects studio leaves very little time for such endeavors,” Stevanoski says.

Since relocating to the US, he has worked on such films as Tim Burton’s 2010 film Alice in Wonderland (starring his wife Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen) Valkyrie, Speed Racer and Beowulf. His most recent project was Green Lantern, where he led a team of about 25 artists doing lighting and compositing work.

Stevanoski is glad to see Macedonian talent proving itself in big budget productions.

“I’m really hopeful that soon there will be a good climate for us to come together and work on something that is as big is the above-mentioned projects, but with the tag, ‘Made in Macedonia,’” he says.

Steve Staios - Canada

Steve Staios (* 28.

Steve Staios has his wife Susanna, son Nathan, daughter Ella, dad Paul and mom Mary from Hamilton here this year. And it's extra special with his mom and dad.

"My parents came from Macedonia nine months apart and landed in Halifax at Pier 21. They both have such vivid memories of their arrival in Halifax and Pier 21 is 50 metres from our hotel. They didn't realize how close they'd be to it.
