George Washington junior Danil Zelenkov notched two singles victories and a pair of doubles wins to earn Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for matches played from Jan. 28-Feb. 3.
On Friday, Zelenkov paired up with senior Francisco Dias to earn a 7-6 (1) victory in the top doubles slot before downing the Pirates' Tendal Tapfuma in second-flight singles action to help clinch a 4-3 Colonials triumph.
The Colonials traveled to Ithaca, N.Y. on Saturday to take on No. 65 Cornell, where Zelenkov and Dias teamed up for their second-straight doubles win, again in the No. 1 slot, by a score of 6-3. Zelenkov remained perfect on the weekend with another singles victory in second-tier action with a 6-2, 6-2 performance as GW split the weekend of competition.
"Danil is playing the best tennis of his career," said Head Coach Greg Munoz. "What makes Danil so good is that he's never satisfied with his game. He can still get better- there's a large window for greater success."
The Skopje, Macedonia native holds a 3-1 singles record this spring, with his only loss coming against the No. 6 player in the country when the Colonials battled the nation's third-ranked Virginia squad.
Zelenkov and the No. 61 Colonials travel to Wichita, Kansas to take on the University of Texas-San Antonio and Wichita State on Feb. 7-9.
