Australian burns survivor of Macedonian decent, Dana Vulin, whose story has shook up the world, is urging Australian politicians and judges to join her personal stand on violence against women, Australian Channel 7 News reports.

She received a standing ovation as she called for tougher penalties for abusers and revealed she was stalked for a month before she was doused with petrol and set alight.

My name is Dana Vulin and I’m a victim of extreme violence,” Dana said.

She may be permanently scared and underwent more surgeries, but Dana Vulin says success is her revenge and today she made a public stand to help others, joining an International Women’s Day campaign under the motto To Kiss Violence against Women Goodbye.

Violence against women doesn’t discriminate on age, wealth or religion. I really is an ugly and disgusting epidemic,” Dana Says.

Twelve percent of Australian women experience sexual violence before the age of 15 and 10 percent physical violence. Dana Vulin knows she’s just one of the survivors and she’s calling for tougher penalties for perpetrators.

Dana’s attacker was jailed for 17 years but that was less than a maximum for a crime the judge described as the worst in its category.

In my mind, she’s a nothing,” Dana emphasized.

The woman convicted of setting Dana on fire in a jealous rage over her estranged husband claimed she was defending herself from a pepper spray attack. Natalie Dimitrovska was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to 27-year-old Dana, who suffered 60 per cent burns to her body, which were so severe that her neck fused to her chest, the court heard.

The attack happened in February 2012.

This is not the first effort of Dana Vulin, who was named she was named as one of Western Australia's Most Remarkable People for 2013, in helping the other victims of violence.

Together with Model Camp Australia, she created a video that does a beautiful job of creating awareness about bullying, suicide and human resilience. In the video, she reminds the public that we need to work to end bullying, prevent suicide and extend our kindness to those who need it most. But above all, the message is clear:

You are not alone and you cannot break a brilliant person.”
