Getting to know Macedonian footballers series: Stefan Spirovski

Our next interview involves Stefan Spirovski, who has played for the senior national team of Macedonia along with several of the youth national teams as well.

The 23-year-old Spirovski is currently on trial with Bulgarian side Beroe.  He has fared well, including playing in one friendly, and his agent told us that he is supposed to officially sign his contract on Saturday.  Our interview with Spirovski was done several days before he went on trial to Beroe.  We had done a number of interviews, and wanted to publish one per every 1-2 days.

Stefan was born in Bitola and started his career with hometown club Pelister.  In our interview, he told us that he began with Pelister's youth academy when he was 8 years old.  In the 2010 winter transfer window, Spirovski began his international career with Borac Čačak in Serbia.  He had a bright start with Borac, scoring a goal in his first couple of appearances.  But, after Borac was relegated to the second division at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season, Stefan began to see a reduced role.  He was ultimately loaned to Rabotnichki in the 2012 summer transfer window.  After returning to Borac in early 2013, Spirovski's status had not changed as he did not see much action.

Finally, at the conclusion of the first half of the season in the current 2013-14 campaign, Spirovski was no longer under contract with Borac Čačak.  He then briefly trained with Portimonense in the Portuguese second division.  Stefan told us that he was not on trial; instead he attended training there for 3-4 days but his documents from Borac could not arrive on time and Portimonense then told him that they couldn't wait anymore.

Spirovski, who was a regular for the Macedonian U21 national team, debuted with the senior national team in August of 2011 during a friendly against Azerbaijan.  Besides that game, he has made three additional appearances for a total of 4 caps.

Here is our question and answer session with Spirovski:

MF: Stefan, tell us about yourself? When did you start playing football, and when did you think you possess the talent to pursue a football career?
SS: I started as an 8 year old in the youth academy of Pelister.

MF: In 2009 you transferred to Serbia with Borac Cacak. How would you characterize your time with Borac?
SS: Everything was ok in the beginning, but later when the club was relegated to the second division, I wanted to leave from there and find myself a better environment.

MF: What is your best position on the field?
SS: I think that playing as a defensive midfielder suits me the best, but I have also played other positions like center-back and attacking midfield.

MF: Now that you are a free agent, what are your plans during the winter transfer window?
SS: Right now, I am in search of a new club.  God willing, we'll see what will happen by the end of the transfer period.  My priority is to find a club from abroad, but I would also not rule out the option of a Macedonian club.

Note: Above question, and all the others, took place before his trial to Beroe was made public.

MF: You have played for the senior national team of Macedonia and also its various youth national teams? What is your favorite personal moment from your time of wearing the Macedonian jersey?
SS: For me, the moment that will always stay with me is when I debuted for the best Macedonian national team against Azerbaijan.

Over the coming days, we will publish interviews with Darko Glishikj (Dinamo Tbilisi), Aleksandar Damchevski (Chernomorets) and Viktor Talevski (Eintracht Frankfurt U19).  Glishikj debuted with the Macedonian national team this past summer, Damchevski plays for the U21 team and recently finalized a transfer to Chernomorets, while Talevski is a member of the U19 national team who plays in the youth academy of German side Eintracht Frankfurt.

Early next week, we will also publish an interview with football agent Nikola Gjosevski.  He will talk about the agent process in Macedonia, and offer suggestions on what changes need to be implemented to improve football in the domestic league.
